MT. POPA: A popular day trip from Bagan (59 km), Mt. Popa

Popa is an extinct volcano and it is covered with a recently grown sandalwood forest. At nearly 1500m in height, Mt.Popa stands as a visible symbol of nature’s victory in the fight against environmental decay. As well as its interesting geology and local fauna, Mt. Popa is famous as the centre of Nats or spirits worship. It is believed to be the home of Myanmar’s legendary 37 Nats, the worship and appeasement of whom mingles easily with Buddhist beliefs.

The area around Mt. Popa is designated a National Park and common wild animals presently observed there include jungle cats, jackals, barking deer, monkeys, rhesus monkey, squirrels and hare. For bird watchers there are also 130 species of avifauna. When reaching the top of the mountain, accompanied by a crowed of monkeys, you will have an overlooking extraordinary panoramic view of the surrounding landscape studded with Bagan ancient structures.

SALE : It is a small town about 15 km south of Bagan. It is noted for U Pone Nya Museum, formerly known as Yoke Sone Monastery meanings multi-statues monastery, exhibiting antique lacquerwares, wooden reliefs and a large standing gilded Buddha image. The figures carved outside the front of the building are worth seeing. Another place worth visiting is Tha-ta-na Kyaung (Keythar monastery) where Tipitaka texts are housed in a large red lacquered cabinet.

PAKOKKU : About 36 km north of Bagan, located on the western bank of Ayeyarwaddy River, is a bustling tobacco center. It is a stopping point for visitors who have visited Chin State to take a river ferry across the river Ayeyarwaddy to the ancient city of Bagan sitting on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwaddy. From there on the way to Monwya you can pay a visit to a wooden monastery of Pakhangyi built in 19 century. Another place to visit is the destroyed monastery of Pakhanngeh, once the largest wooden monastery in Myanmar.

“BAGAN DAY TOURS INFORMATION”

bagan-day-tour01bagan-day-tour02

bagan-day-tour03bagan-day-tour04

Ananda Temple : It is the most famous Pagoda in the Bagan’s temples, and it is considered the masterpiece of Mon architecture. It was built in 1091 by King Kyansitha. The structure of the Temple is that of a simple corridor temple. Other interesting features of the temple are the numerous glazed terracotta tiles ornamenting the base and the receding terraces which represent the Jataka stories of the Buddha and the hosts of Mara’s army. Each of these plaques is inscribed with a Mon legend. The inner walls are honey-combed with niches in which are set small stone Buddhas in various postures. The most notable among the sculptures is a series of eighty reliefs in the two lower tiers of niches in the outer corridor, illustrating the life of the Bodhisattva from his birth to the attainment of supreme wisdom. The western sanctum also enshrines the life-size statues of its founder, Kyanzittha and the primate, Shin Arahan.

Thatbyinnyu Temple : It lies in the center of Bagan, half-kilometer away from Ananda. It is also known as the “Temple of Omniscience” and is the tallest pagoda in Bagan, totally 201 feets in high.

It was built by King Alaungsithu in the middle of the 12th century A.D. There are two tires of windows in each story of the Thatbyinnyu, as well as huge arches inlaid with flamboyant pediments making the interior bright and allowing a breeze to flow through. Entering by east porch one is confronted by the stairway guarded by two standing figures of the guardians. At the top was a stupa containing holy relics. The upper story can be reached by climbing interior stairs to the intermediate terraces, then taking an exterior staircase to the cellar. Three Square terraces with medial stairways rest on this cubicle.

Shwezigon Pagoda : It is one of the most venerated pagodas in Myanmar,  King Anawrahta, thinking of himself as a “universal monarch”, set about to obtain all possible relics of the Buddha. He got the Buddha’s collar bone and frontal bone from Pyay and an emerald Buddha figure from Yunan of China. All these sacred relics were enshrined in this pagoda. As he died in 1077, King Kyansitha supervised the completion of the structure in 1089. It is a solid cylindrical in style and is a prototype of other similar structures in Myanmar. On each of the four sides of pagoda is small temple which enshrines the standing Buddha of the Gupta style. At the northeast corner of the platform there are 37images of nats or spirits in a shrine hall. Shwezigon Pagoda festival is held annually during the month of November or December with an honor of the pagoda.

Damayangyi Temple : It is said to be Bagan’s largest shrine. It was built by King Narathu in     1660-65 who was also known as Kalagya Min or the King assassinated by Indians. The finest brickwork is to be seen in this temple because it is said that Narathu oversaw the construction himself, and he had masons executed if a needle could be pushed between the bricks they had laid. As he was seriously concerned about his future lives after having murdered his father, Narathu built it to atone for his misdeed.

Manuha Temple : It was built by the captive King of Thaton in 1059 A.D, situated just south of Myinkaba village. The builder’s grievance is graphically demonstrated by representing one reclining and three seated Buddha images cramped uncomfortably within the narrow confines of the pagoda. It is said to symbolize the distressed soul of the defeated King, and is an example of early jail architecture in Myanmar. Unlike to most of Mon-style temple, its upper story is smaller than the lower. It is collapsed during 1975 earthquake and was renovated in 1981.grievance is graphically demonstrated by representing one reclining and three seated Buddha images cramped uncomfortably within the narrow confines of the pagoda.

Nanpaya Temple : It is situated close to the Manuha temple. According to tradition, it was used as the residence of the captive Mon king, Manuha. It is built of brick and mud mortar and surfaced with stone, and is square in plan with a porch projection on the east face. Flanking the sanctuary in the main building are four stone pillars on the sides of each of which are carved triangular flora designs and the figures of the Brahma holding lotus flowers in each hand. Like other earlier temples at Pagan it has perforated stone windows to admit light into the building.

Shwesandaw Pagoda : One of only three religious structures King Anawrahta built in Bagan, it was constructed in 1057 after his victorious return from Thaton. Its stupa enshrines some of the sacred hairs of Buddha obtained from the King of Bago (Pegu). The pagoda spire collapsed in the 1975 earthquake and it has already been replaced.

Tharabba Gateway : If you enter the ancient city you’ll pass through the main gate on the east wall named Tharabba Gateway. It is the only structure left of the old city built by King Pyibya in the 9th century . Traces of stucco carving on the frieze are visible on the exterior walls. The entrance to it is guarded by two Bagan’s guardians-nats or spirits, called MahagiriNats. These two nats, brother and sister, are namely Maung Tint de (Mr. Handsome) and his sister Shwemyethna (Miss Golden Face) whose images are deposited in a monastery shrine, the male on the left and the female on the right. They are the most important spirit beings in Myanmar history.

“MANDALAY DAY TOURS SAGAING INWA INFORMATION”

day-tour13day-tour14

day-tour15day-tour16

SAGAING : Once a 4th century capital city, capital, Sagaing lies 21 km southwest of Mandalay, beside Ayeyarwaddy River. The Sagaing Hills are dotted with pagodas and there are over 500 monasteries, a retreat for some 6000 monks and nuns. In one sense, the city is still a nexus, although of reverence and devoutness, not political power. Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda situated on the top of the Sagaing Hill, KaungHmudaw Pagoda (an impressive copy of the Mahaceti Pagoda in Sri Lanka), and many other local pagodas are of interest. Silver-smiths still fashion intricate and unique jewellery in Sagiang and their workshops are worth visiting to purchase eye-catching necklaces and bracelets are inexpensive prices.

IN-WA (Ava) :

Inwa, it is situated 20 km (1 hr drive) southwest of Mandalay, was founded as the nucleus of the Myanmar empire in 1364 after the fall of Bagan to the Mongol army of Kublai Khan. It remained the seat of Myanmar kings for almost four centuries. Its original walled boundary was not geometric but shaped like a seated lion, similar to those that guard the entrances of many pagodas. Only a small part of this wall remains, the gated section where the ceremonial hair washing of the king took place. Stood as the original name of In-Wa, Yadanarpura, meant City of Precious Gems.

Today In-wa is a small town and it would be easy to overlook its power and prominence in past centuries. Other local sites included the Nanmyint Watch Tower, MahaAungmyeBonzan monastery and In-wa Bridge, spanning the Ayeyarwaddy River. Sightseeing is done by horse-cart due to the road condition, but this is a fascinating way to cover In-wa.

OTHER ATTRECTION : MINGUN, An hour boat excursion up river from Mandalay takes you to Mingun where you can see the vast picturesque ruin of King Bodawpaya's unfinished pagoda. Had he finished it to scale, following the much smaller initial model standing on the riverbank nearby, it would have been the world’s largest stupa but an astrological prediction in 1797, that the king would die upon its completion, put a stop to construction.

An earthquake in 1839 opened cracks in the huge structure. Opposite the pagoda you can also see the remains of colossal huge brick lions facing the river. Mingun is one of the most visited places in the vicinity of Mandalay, well-known for its Mingun Bell cast in 1790 under orders from King Bodawpaya and weighing 90 tons. Still suspended, the bell can be rung , making it the largest ringing bell in the world, and visitors can crouch under its extremities and stand inside its giant dome.

The boat-ride excursion to Mingun provides you with an excellent chance to sunbathe enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Ayeyarwaddy River. Allow half a day for the visit.

TAUNGGYI : Taunggyi, over 1430m above sea-level, is the capital of Shan State. A sizeable town and the economic centre of this productive region, it was once a British hill station as the climate is cool and pleasant all the year round.

The annual hot air balloon Festival of Taunggyi is immensely popular throughout Myanmar, and throngs come to see the airborne marvels created in honour of the Buddha. Fireworks fill the sky and Taunggyi becomes the centre of entertainment and delight for three days and nights. The market, offering everything from handmade bamboo, plastic and wire baskets, to cooked frogs, live eels, traditional medicines, every kind of fruit and vegetable, extraordinary flowers and fabrics, is held every fifth day. It is crowded with ethnic minorities in their brightly colored traditional dress. The journey from Inle lake to Taunggyi takes about an hour. For golfing enthusiasts there is the added bonus of the 18 hole Aye Thay Gold Resort, located at the bottom of Taunggyi hill.

KAKKU : Kakku, about 40 km south of Taunggyi (a 1½ hour drive), is one of the famous religious sites of Shan State, and the holiest religious site of the local Pa-O people. Over two thousand stupas and temples, many years old, stand together in a complex rarely visited by foreigners. The tinkling sound of countless Htis (brass parasols atop the stupas, the remoteness and air of long neglect, make this a magical place. Visitors need to obtain a special pass and engage a Pa-an guide in order to enter the complex or its nearby villages. You can reach there by car or by trekking from Inle Lake for one day.
